Quick answer: find low-competition keywords by expanding a seed term into long-tails (questions, modifiers, comparisons), filtering by difficulty under ~30 as a first pass, then verifying the SERP by eye — forum threads, thin content, or off-topic pages in the top ten mean the keyword is winnable regardless of the score. Map each winner to one page and build clusters, not one-offs.

Every niche has keywords the big players cannot be bothered to win — too specific, too small individually, too numerous to chase. That is precisely why they are available, and why a new or mid-sized site's entire early strategy should run through them. Here is the method, start to finish.

Step 1 — Expand the seed

Take one head term you wish you could rank for ("standing desk") and explode it into the specific versions people actually type:

  • Questions: what is / how to choose / is X worth it / X vs Y — every one is a page. (The LSI keyword generator produces these groups instantly.)
  • Modifiers: for small spaces, for tall people, under $300, with drawers, quiet, electric — attribute long-tails are shopping queries in disguise.
  • Autocomplete mining: type the seed plus each letter a–z into Google and harvest the suggestions; repeat inside People Also Ask.
  • Your own data: Search Console queries where you have impressions but rank 15–40 — Google is already tentatively matching you; these are the warmest leads on the list.

A hundred candidates in thirty minutes is normal. Volume comes later; coverage first.

Step 2 — Filter by numbers (loosely)

Run the list through a keyword research tool and keep, roughly: difficulty under 30, volume above ~50, and intent that fits a page you could genuinely build. Do not over-trust any single column. Difficulty scores measure the backlink strength of current ranking domains — an average that hides winnable SERPs (see step 3) and occasionally flags impossible ones as easy. The score's job is to shrink the list, not to decide.

Step 3 — Read the SERP like an underwriter

This step is the method. For each surviving keyword, open the actual results and look for the five weakness signals:

  1. Forums in the top ten. Reddit or Quora ranking means no dedicated page answers this well. Strongest signal there is.
  2. Intent mismatch. Generic category pages ranking for a specific question, or informational posts ranking for a buying query — a focused page beats a misfit page.
  3. Thin or dated content. 400-word posts from 2021, listicles with no depth, pages that clearly never mention half the query's words.
  4. Low-authority domains ranking. If sites your size hold positions 3–8, the field is open. (Compare with any authority metric — same tool on both sides.)
  5. No exact-match titles. When nobody's title contains the query phrase, nobody is deliberately competing for it.

Two or more signals = shortlist. Zero signals despite a low score = the score lied; move on.

Step 4 — Map and build in clusters

Give every shortlisted keyword exactly one owning page in a keyword-to-page map, then build in clusters: a pillar page on the parent topic, supporting posts on the long-tails, dense internal links both ways. The long-tails rank in weeks (that is what low competition means), their internal links feed the pillar, and six months later the pillar competes for head terms that were fantasy at the start. For a store, the same structure runs through collections: the collection page is the pillar, buying-guide posts are the cluster, and each post links down to products.

Step 5 — Verify the wins

Low-competition targets should show movement inside 4–8 weeks — that speed is the point, and also your feedback loop. Track the rankings weekly; anything stuck outside the top 20 after two months either picked the wrong keyword (re-read the SERP) or shipped a page that does not answer it (fix the page — the on-page checklist covers what Google needs to see). Keywords that reach positions 11–20 get priority: one round of title, answer-paragraph, and internal-link improvements typically carries them onto page one.

The quiet advantage of this whole method in 2026: specific questions are exactly what AI answer engines get asked, and pages built to answer them directly are what gets cited. Low-competition SEO and AEO are, increasingly, the same work.
