Free Image Alt Text Generator & Checker for Products

Quick answer: describe the image below and get clean, screen-reader-friendly alt text under 125 characters — or paste existing alt text to check length, "image of" redundancy, and keyword stuffing. Good alt text describes what the image literally shows, with the attributes a shopper would search.

Why alt text is the most neglected ranking signal in ecommerce

Most Shopify catalogs ship with empty alt attributes or auto-filled filenames ("IMG_2041.jpg") — which means three audiences get nothing: screen-reader users, Google Images (a genuine product-discovery channel), and the multimodal AI systems now deciding which product images answer shopping questions. The fix costs one descriptive sentence per image.

The formula the generator uses: attributes + subject + context, under 125 characters, no "image of" preamble, no keyword lists. It reads naturally because it is a description first — the SEO value comes from the fact that honest product descriptions naturally contain the words shoppers search: material, color, style, setting.

Practical rule: Write the alt text you would speak aloud to someone who cannot see the image.

How to apply alt text in Shopify admin

Navigate to Products → All products → [your product] → Media. Hover over any image and click the pencil icon that appears. A drawer opens with an "Add alt text" field. Paste your generated text, hit Save, and the change is live immediately — no theme publish required.

For collection images: Products → Collections → [your collection] → Collection image → Edit. For theme assets such as banners or the store logo: Online Store → Themes → Customize, click the image block, and fill the alt text field in the sidebar panel.

Practical rule: Fix alt text during a product import — retrofitting a large catalog costs far more time than setting it correctly at upload.

What good, mediocre, and broken alt text look like

Type Example Effect
Filename left as-is IMG_2041.jpg No signal; screen readers read the filename aloud
Generic label "product image" Marginally better than blank; still useless to Google
Keyword list "blue dress women summer cheap dress" Reads as spam; Google's guidelines explicitly flag this pattern
Formula-based "Sleeveless midi dress in cobalt jersey, belted waist, knee length" Descriptive, naturally keyword-rich, passes a screen-reader audit

The 125-character ceiling is practical, not a Shopify hard limit. Longer strings are stored and displayed, but some screen readers and search snippet parsers deprioritize text beyond that length, so it is a safe stopping point.

Edge cases worth knowing

Multiple angles of the same product: differentiating by angle alone wastes the opportunity. "Front view" and "back view" tell Google the same product twice. Better: "Tailored wool blazer, double-breasted front, notch lapel" and "Tailored wool blazer showing structured back seam and single vent."

Variant images: if a red and a navy colorway each have their own image, the color belongs in the alt text of each. Without it, Google Images cannot surface them as distinct shopping results for color-specific searches.

Decorative images: a purely decorative divider or texture should carry an empty alt attribute (alt=""), not a description. Shopify's alt text field left blank renders as alt="" — that is the correct, intentional behaviour for decorative elements, not an error to fix.

Practical rule: If a variant image changes color, material, or configuration, put that difference in the alt text — not just the shared product name.

Two scale problems this tool cannot solve

Writing alt text for hundreds of images, and describing what is actually in each image without looking. RankEngine does both — its AI vision reads each product image, writes a literal description keyed to the product, applies it through the Shopify API, and verifies every write. The image alt text guide has the full playbook if you prefer doing it by hand.

If you are auditing other on-page signals at the same time, the Shopify SEO checklist covers the full set of ranking factors, and the product page SEO guide goes deeper on title tags, meta descriptions, and structured data alongside image optimisation.

Frequently asked questions

What makes good alt text for SEO?

A specific, literal description of what the image shows, under about 125 characters, with the product’s key attributes: "Sage green linen duvet cover on an oak bed frame, morning light" — not "duvet" and not "buy linen duvet cover best price free shipping". Write for a person who cannot see the image; search engines reward exactly that.

Why 125 characters?

Screen readers historically truncate around 125 characters, and concise descriptions force specificity. It is a guideline, not a penalty threshold — but if you need 200 characters, the image probably needs a caption instead.

Should alt text start with "image of"?

No. Screen readers already announce it as an image, so "image of" wastes the first words twice over. Start with the subject: "Handmade ceramic pour-over set in matte white".

Does alt text really affect rankings?

Yes, three ways: it is a relevance signal for the page, it is the primary signal for Google Images (a real traffic source for products), and it is what multimodal AI systems read when deciding whether your product image answers a shopping query. Plus it is an accessibility requirement — the only SEO task that is also the law in many markets.

How do I add alt text in Shopify?

Open the product, click the image, choose "Edit alt text", save. For a whole catalog that is hundreds of clicks — RankEngine writes alt text for every product image via AI vision (it looks at the actual image), applies it through the Shopify API, and verifies each write landed.
