Quick answer: the product title formula that ranks: attribute + product type + distinguishing detail — "Stonewashed Linen Duvet Cover — Sage Green, Queen". Front-load real attributes (material, color, size, use case) because those are the exact words shoppers search; skip internal names and filler adjectives. The title becomes your H1 and default meta title, so it is the single highest-leverage field on the page.
Shopify reuses the product title everywhere — H1, meta title, Shopping feed, cart, order emails — which makes it the one field where a better sentence improves rankings, ads, and conversion simultaneously. It is also where stores make the most predictable mistakes.
The formula, and why it works
[Key attribute] + [Product type] + [Distinguishing detail]
- "Organic Ceremonial Matcha Powder — 100g, Uji Japan"
- "Waterproof Hiking Boots — Men's, Wide Fit"
- "Ceramic Pour-Over Coffee Set — Matte White, 4-Piece"
Each word is one a shopper might type. That is the entire trick: search engines match queries to titles nearly verbatim for product searches, and long-tail buyers ("wide fit waterproof hiking boots") convert at multiples of head-term browsers. The attributes are not decoration on the keyword — they are the keywords, arranged in the order people search them. Test any title's length and keyword position in the free title checker.
Product title vs SEO title — use the split deliberately
Shopify gives you two fields, and the default (SEO title = product title) is right until the jobs diverge. Diverge them when:
- The visible name is brand-led ("The Meadow Duvet") but search demands attributes → SEO title: "Sage Green Linen Duvet Cover — Queen | The Meadow".
- The product title runs long for Shopping-feed reasons → SEO title: the under-60-character cut that survives Google's truncation.
- You want a click reason in search only ("— Free Returns") that would clutter the cart and emails.
Set it under Search engine listing → Edit → Page title. The visible name stays; Google sees the optimized version.
The five title mistakes that cost rankings
- Internal names. "Aurora v2 (Restock)" ranks for nothing. Every unsearchable word is a wasted slot.
- ALL CAPS and symbol salad. "🔥BEST!! Duvet Cover★" — wastes pixels, reads as spam to engines and adults alike.
- Keyword stuffing. "Duvet Cover Linen Duvet Cover Sage Duvet Cover Queen" — Google demotes it, shoppers distrust it. One clean phrasing wins.
- Identical titles across near-duplicates. Ten colorways all titled "Linen Duvet Cover" cannibalize each other; append the distinguishing attribute to each, or consolidate to one product with variants.
- Renaming established products casually. The handle (URL) often follows the title, and changing a ranking page's handle without a redirect torches its equity. Retitle freely; re-handle rarely, and always with the redirect box ticked. (Redirect guide.)
Titles at catalog scale
Auditing four hundred titles by hand is nobody's weekend. RankEngine flags products whose titles miss their focus keyword, are duplicated, or truncate in search, then rewrites them in bulk through the Shopify API — attribute-first, length-checked — and verifies every write against the live store. The full Shopify SEO guide covers where titles sit in the larger on-page system, and the keyword mapping template decides which keyword each product's title should own in the first place.
