Quick answer: fill in the URL and the three required parameters and copy a clean, tagged link. Values are lowercased and hyphenated as you type — that single habit is what stops one campaign appearing as four rows in your analytics.

The five parameters
| Parameter | Answers | Example |
|---|---|---|
utm_source |
Which specific property sent the click | newsletter, instagram, partner-blog |
utm_medium |
What kind of channel it is | email, cpc, social, affiliate |
utm_campaign |
Which push this belongs to | spring-sale-2026 |
utm_term |
The paid keyword | ceramic coffee set |
utm_content |
Which link inside one message | hero-button vs footer-link |
The first three are what nearly every report groups by. The last two only earn their place when you are running paid search or A/B testing two links in the same send.
Consistency beats correctness
There is no official list of valid values. email and e-mail are both "right", and that is exactly the problem: analytics groups on exact strings, so a team that uses both sees one channel as two, each with half the numbers. Pick a convention, write it down, and apply it mechanically. Lowercase-and-hyphenate is the usual choice because it removes the two decisions people get wrong most — capitalisation and spaces.
This tool applies that normalisation as you type rather than warning you afterwards, on the theory that a rule you cannot forget beats a rule you must remember.
Never put UTMs on internal links
Tagging a link from your own homepage to your own collection page does two harmful things: it restarts the session in most analytics tools, so the original source is overwritten and the visit is credited to yourself; and it creates a second crawlable URL for a page that already had one.
If you want to know which internal element gets clicked, use an analytics event. UTMs are for traffic arriving from outside.
Keeping tagged URLs out of the index
Tagged links get shared, linked and occasionally crawled. Two defences, both cheap:
- Self-referencing canonical on every page, pointing at the clean URL. Any tagged variant Google crawls then consolidates back to one URL. This is standard on Shopify themes but worth verifying — see Shopify canonical tags.
- Do not link to tagged URLs from your sitemap or navigation. The sitemap should only ever list canonical, parameter-free URLs.
With both in place, parameter URLs are a reporting detail rather than a duplicate content problem.
Frequently asked questions
What are UTM parameters?
Five optional query-string parameters — utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, utm_term and utm_content — that analytics tools read to attribute a visit to a specific campaign. They are appended to a normal URL and change nothing about the page; they exist purely so the arriving traffic can be labelled.
Which three are required?
utm_source (where the click came from, e.g. newsletter), utm_medium (the channel type, e.g. email) and utm_campaign (the specific push, e.g. spring-sale). utm_term is for paid keywords and utm_content distinguishes two links in the same email or ad. With fewer than the first three, most reports bucket the visit as unattributed.
Why does casing matter?
Google Analytics treats utm_source=Facebook and utm_source=facebook as two different sources, so one campaign silently splits across several rows and every per-source number is understated. This tool lowercases and hyphenates automatically for that reason — the discipline matters far more than the choice of convention.
Do UTM parameters hurt SEO?
They can, if tagged URLs get crawled and indexed: the same page then exists at many URLs, splitting signals. Two habits prevent it — never use UTMs on internal links (use an analytics event instead), and make sure every page self-canonicalises to its clean, parameter-free URL so any crawled variant consolidates.
Will these links work outside Google Analytics?
Yes. UTM parameters are a de facto standard that Shopify Analytics, Matomo, Plausible, Fathom, Adobe and most others read. Nothing here is GA-specific.
