SERP preview — see your Google snippet before you publish

Quick answer: type a title, URL and description and watch the snippet render at real widths. The pixel readouts are what decide truncation — character counts only approximate it.

Pixels, not characters

Google cuts a title when its rendered width exceeds roughly 580 px on desktop, not when it passes some character count. Because letter widths vary by about 3× between i and W, two titles of identical length can render very differently:

  • Minimal Wire Wall Mirrors — 25 characters, wide capitals, ~250 px
  • Fill illicit little lilt — 24 characters, narrow letters, ~150 px

This tool measures the actual text using the browser's own font metrics, which is why the preview above matches what you will see in the results page more closely than a character counter can.

Google rewrites descriptions, and that is fine

Studies consistently find Google rewriting the meta description for the majority of queries, pulling a passage from the page that matches what was actually searched. That is not a failure of your description — it is Google serving a query you did not write for.

The practical consequence: write the description for your primary query, and make sure the body copy contains clean, self-contained sentences that answer the secondary ones. Those sentences are what gets lifted when Google decides your description is not the best fit.

What to put in the description

  • The answer, or a concrete reason to click. Not a restatement of the title.
  • The specifics a searcher is comparing on: price, delivery, material, quantity.
  • A natural use of the query, because matched terms are bolded and bolding draws the eye.

What to leave out: your brand name (it is already on the line above), "welcome to our website", and keyword lists.

Where this fits

Use the SEO title generator to draft titles and the meta description generator to draft descriptions, then preview the pair here before publishing. Shopify meta description covers where these fields live in the Shopify admin and how to change them in bulk.

Frequently asked questions

Why measure pixels instead of characters?

Google truncates by rendered width, not character count. A title of 60 narrow characters can fit where 55 wide ones do not, because W and M are roughly three times the width of i and l. Character counts are a rough proxy that fails exactly on the titles you most want to get right — the ones near the limit.

What are the actual limits?

Roughly 580 px for a desktop title and about 920 px for the description; mobile allows a little more title width and fewer description lines. Google has never published exact figures and adjusts them, so treat any number as approximate and leave headroom rather than optimising to the last pixel.

Why does Google show something different from my meta description?

Because Google rewrites descriptions most of the time, choosing a passage from the page that matches the specific query. Your description is a strong default, not a guarantee. Write it well for the query you actually target, and accept that long-tail queries will often surface something else.

Does the meta description affect rankings?

Not directly — it has not been a ranking factor for many years. It affects click-through rate, which is why it still matters commercially. A description that answers the query and gives a reason to click earns clicks a truncated or generic one does not.

Should every page have a unique description?

Every page you care about, yes. Duplicated descriptions across a catalogue tell searchers nothing and waste the one piece of copy you fully control in the results page. For very large catalogues a well-built template beats both duplication and leaving it blank.
