Quick answer: fill in the fields and copy the tag block into your
. The preview shows the 1.91:1 card most platforms render. Use a 1200 × 630 image and an absolute HTTPS URL — those two choices fix the large majority of broken previews.Open Graph generator — free og: and Twitter card tags
The tags that actually matter
| Tag | Why |
|---|---|
og:title |
The headline on the card. Not necessarily your SEO title — this one is read by a person scrolling a feed. |
og:description |
One or two lines. Cut hard on LinkedIn and Facebook. |
og:image |
The single biggest factor in whether the link gets clicked. |
og:url |
The canonical URL. Keeps shares of tagged or parameterised variants consolidated onto one entry. |
og:type |
website, article or product. |
twitter:card |
Set summary_large_image or X renders a small thumbnail. |
Everything else is optional, and the twitter:* duplicates of title, description and image are only needed if you want them to differ from the Open Graph values — X falls back to og: otherwise.
Image rules
- 1200 × 630 px, ratio 1.91:1.
- Absolute HTTPS URL. A relative path is the most common cause of a card with no image; scrapers do not resolve them.
- Under ~5 MB, ideally well under.
- Keep text away from the edges. Some surfaces crop to a square, and a headline that runs edge to edge loses its first and last words.
- Do not reuse the product photo unchanged. A white-background product shot is correct on a product page and invisible in a feed. A card with the product name set over the image reads at thumbnail size; the bare photo does not.
Cache busting
Every platform caches its scrape, often for days. If you replace the image at the same URL, the old one keeps appearing. Two fixes, in order of reliability:
- Change the URL — new filename, or append
?v=2. This always works. - Force a re-scrape — Facebook Sharing Debugger, LinkedIn Post Inspector, or X's card validator. Usually works, occasionally does not.
Shopify defaults
Most themes already emit the core four tags from the product's featured image and description. Check before adding your own: two og:image tags on one page means the platform picks one, and which one is not something you control.
If your theme's defaults are fine, the highest-value change is usually a purpose-made social image rather than more tags. Social sharing image and SEO on Shopify covers where the theme sets this and how to override it per product.
Frequently asked questions
What are Open Graph tags?
Meta tags in the <head> that tell social platforms and messaging apps how to render a link: which title, description and image to show in the preview card. Without them each platform guesses from the page, and the guess is usually the first image it finds and a truncated fragment of body copy.
What size should the og:image be?
1200 × 630 px, a 1.91:1 ratio. That renders correctly as a large card on Facebook, LinkedIn, X and Slack. Keep it under about 5 MB, use an absolute HTTPS URL, and keep important text away from the edges since some surfaces crop to a square.
Do I need Twitter card tags as well as Open Graph?
Mostly not. X falls back to Open Graph when the twitter: equivalents are absent, so og:title, og:description and og:image usually suffice. The one tag worth adding explicitly is twitter:card set to summary_large_image, which selects the large format rather than the small thumbnail.
Do Open Graph tags affect SEO?
Not directly — Google does not use them for ranking. They affect whether a shared link looks like something worth clicking, which affects shares and the traffic and links that follow. It is an indirect effect and a real one.
I updated my image and the old one still shows. Why?
Every platform caches the scrape aggressively. Force a refresh with Facebook’s Sharing Debugger, LinkedIn’s Post Inspector, or X’s card validator. If the image changed at the same URL, change the URL too — a new filename or a query string is the only reliable way past a stubborn cache.
What does Shopify do by default?
Most themes emit og:title, og:description, og:image and og:url, using the product’s featured image. That is a reasonable default and it is rarely optimal: a product photo on a white background makes a weak social card compared with a purpose-made 1200 × 630 image carrying the product name.
